Applications Open — NSF REU Site at Clemson University (Summer 2026)  - see FLYER

REU Site: Integrating Machine Learning and Causal Principles for Civil and Environmental Engineers

We are now accepting applications for our NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site at Clemson University. Each summer, 12 undergraduate researchers join an 8-week, full-time cohort to work with faculty mentors at the intersection of machine learning, causal inference, and civil & environmental engineering (CEE)—with projects motivated by real infrastructure needs (e.g., structural systems, equitable water systems, low-carbon transportation, and hazard-resilient infrastructure).

Program at a glance

  • Program dates: Starting May 2026 (10 weeks, in residence at Clemson University)

  • Cohort size: 12 undergraduate students

  • Focus: ML + causal principles for CEE applications

Examples of research themes

  • Resilient infrastructure under extreme events (hazards, climate, and uncertainty)

  • Data-driven and causal approaches for water distribution and environmental systems

  • ML for transportation efficiency, congestion reduction, and network optimization

  • Responsible and ethical ML in public-serving infrastructure decisions
  • Digital twin for productivity/safety with causal inference

  • Many, many more!

Participant support

Participants receive a competitive weekly stipend ($700) and program support such as housing, a meal plan, and travel assistance (up to $1,000). Additional details will be shared with applicants upon request.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate (and not have completed the B.S. degree before the program begins)

  • Be able to participate full-time, in residence, for the full program dates

  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident (NSF requirement)

We strongly encourage applications from students who have had no/limited research experience.

Important dates

  • Applications open: 2/3/2026

  • Application deadline: 3/3/2026

  • Decisions announced: April 2026

How to apply

Apply via email (mlceereu@clemson.edu) with “NSF REU Application 2026” in the subject line. Please include a short statement of interest, a résumé/CV, and reference contact information.
